When your barrier is struggling, water escapes faster than your skin can replace it, and even products you have used for years can start to sting. A red breakout can also leave a pink mark for months. Beta glucan helps your skin stay hydrated and calm while it recovers.

The short answer

Beta glucan is a hydrating, healing ingredient. It holds water against your skin and works with the immune cells in your skin to settle irritation and support repair. Skin feels more comfortable from the first use, and the calming builds over the next few weeks. It is gentle on reactive skin.

What it does

Beta glucan is a hydrating, healing ingredient. It holds water against your skin and works with the immune cells in your skin to settle irritation and support repair. Skin feels more comfortable from the first use, and the calming builds over the next few weeks. It is gentle on reactive skin.

Why irritated skin loses water and turns red

The top layers of your skin are not dead. They signal to the deeper layers to regulate hydration, collagen and cell renewal, which means everything underneath depends on a healthy barrier. A thin layer of oils and fats on the surface helps stop water from evaporating.

When harsh cleansing, cold weather or strong actives used too often damage the barrier, water escapes and irritants get in, and your skin answers with redness, stinging and tightness. Dry skin makes too little oil to begin with, which means it needs barrier care every day.

Inflammation is also why breakouts come up red and sore. After a red breakout heals, small blood vessels in that spot can stay widened and leave a pink or red mark, called post-inflammatory erythema, or PIE, which fades as those vessels settle.

How beta glucan works

It holds water in your skin

Beta glucan is a long chain of sugar molecules that binds water. Applied topically, it forms a thin, flexible film that slows evaporation, which leaves skin softer and less tight.

It calms irritation

Your skin cells and the immune cells in your skin carry a receptor called Dectin-1 that recognizes beta glucan. In laboratory work on skin cells and lab-grown skin, a yeast form lowered several signals that drive inflammation, raised one that calms it, and reduced water loss.

It supports healing

Beta glucan also prompts immune cells called macrophages to release growth factors, the signals that tell skin to rebuild. It works with your repair response rather than shutting it down, which is why it has been studied in wound care.

Where beta glucan comes from

Beta glucan is found in the cell walls of oats, barley, yeast and mushrooms. Oat beta glucan is a straight chain, while yeast and mushroom forms carry short side branches. Most wound research uses the yeast form, and oat beta glucan is better known for holding water.

Yeast beta glucan is often modified into sodium carboxymethyl beta-glucan, which dissolves easily in serums. Colloidal oatmeal, which is finely ground whole oat, contains beta glucan along with oat oils and other calming compounds.

When the barrier is damaged, water escapes and skin reddens. As it repairs, water stays in and red marks can settle.

What the research shows

The human research comes mostly from wound care, and the studies are small. In 12 people with long-standing leg ulcers, a 3 percent yeast beta glucan cream shrank the ulcers by about half over 90 days, with no comparison group. In a randomized, double-blind trial of 60 people with diabetic foot and leg ulcers, 44 percent of ulcers had healed by eight weeks with beta glucan, against 17 percent with a placebo, although by twelve weeks the gap could have been chance. A 2018 review called for larger trials.

For everyday skin, a small study run by the ingredient developers found oat beta glucan reached the deeper layers of human skin samples, and 27 people using it for eight weeks had shallower wrinkles.

What to look for on a label

The names it goes by

On an ingredient list, look for Beta-Glucan, Sodium Carboxymethyl Beta-Glucan or Schizophyllan, which comes from a mushroom. The research has not settled whether one source works better than another on everyday skin.

Where it sits in your routine

A beta glucan serum goes on after cleansing and before your moisturizer. If yours is in a moisturizer, that is your moisturizer step. Cleansers do a weaker version of what serums do, which means a beta glucan cleanser is a small bonus rather than your main source.

What works best with beta glucan

Beta glucan is not an acid or an exfoliant and does not need a particular pH to work, which means it does not interfere with other ingredients. Hyaluronic acid draws water in while the beta glucan film helps keep it there, and ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids, the three main fats in your barrier, slow water loss from within.

When breakouts are red and inflamed, we start with mandelic acid or azelaic acid, which reduce acne bacteria and speed up cell turnover, and add beta glucan alongside to hydrate and heal. It pairs well with benzoyl peroxide and a retinoid too, keeping skin hydrated and calm while those ingredients work.

Sunscreen every morning, reapplied through the day. UV damages the barrier you are repairing, and beta glucan does not block UV.

Common questions

Will beta glucan help my red marks after breakouts?

Yes, in our experience. Red marks fade as the small blood vessels under them settle, and in the treatment room we see beta glucan help that along. No study has tested it on these marks yet.

I am allergic to oats. Can I use beta glucan?

Yes, if you choose a form that does not come from oats. Avoid oat beta glucan and colloidal oatmeal, and choose a product that names a yeast or mushroom source, unless you are allergic to those too. Patch test on your inner arm for a few days first.

Can I use it after a peel, laser or microneedling?

Yes, following the aftercare your provider gave you. After microneedling, soothing products are fine in the first forty-eight hours and anything anti-inflammatory waits. We class beta glucan as soothing, because it works with your skin's healing rather than shutting it down. If your product also contains strong anti-inflammatory ingredients, wait the full forty-eight hours.

How soon will I see something?

Skin feels more comfortable from the first use. Irritation usually settles over one to two weeks of daily use, and the barrier takes about four weeks to replenish and repair. Red marks after breakouts fade more slowly, often over three to six months, and around week four they can look unchanged. That is when many people stop, and more time is usually the better move.

Photograph your skin on day one, in the same spot and natural daylight, then every four weeks.

Is it safe in pregnancy?

Generally, yes. Beta glucan has no known concern in pregnancy, although, like most skincare ingredients, it has not been tested on pregnant people. Check with your OB or midwife before starting anything new.

How to use it

  • Use beta glucan once or twice a day, every day, from the start.
  • Apply a beta glucan serum to clean skin, then your moisturizer to keep the water in.
  • If your beta glucan comes in a mask, use it as often as the manufacturer recommends.
  • Keep using it on healing skin, including breakouts that have just calmed down.
  • On retinoid or benzoyl peroxide nights, keep beta glucan in your serum or moisturizer step.
  • Broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, reapplied through the day.

A note on the evidence. Laboratory research supports the calming and barrier effects of beta glucan. The human studies are small and mostly from wound care, and the cosmetic study was run by the ingredient developers. Red marks after breakouts have not been studied, and what we say about them comes from the treatment room.
